Discover an exceptional geological site!
Witness the break-up of the continents
The Chaîne des Puys is a chain of more than 80 volcanoes, aligned from north to south. The chain is 45 km long, with a width ranging from 3 to 5 km. The volcanoes are relatively young, the first eruption took place 95,000 years ago, the most recent one just 8,600 years ago. Its highest point is the Puy de Dôme (1,465 m).
An authentic site, a true theatre of nature
The Chaîne des Puys shows how the earth's crust broke and collapsed, causing the magma to rise and massively lift the surface. Through this geological story, admire the landscapes and let your imagination run wild.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
On 2 July 2018, the Chaîne des Puys and the Limagne Fault were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is also the first natural site in mainland France to be included on the list.
