The very name Montpeyroux, from the Latin mons petrosus ("stony mountain"), sets the tone: everything here is built of arkose, a local blond stone that captures the light and gives the village golden reflections, especially at sunset. As you wander through the flower-lined streets, you'll be amazed by the vaulted passageways, exterior staircases, sculpted lintels, and old winegrowers' houses.

Montpeyroux was long a strategic fortified town on the Regordane Way, connecting the north and south of France. Protected by prominent families such as the Tour d'Auvergne family, to which Catherine de Medici belonged, the village has preserved some superb remains.
The 33-meter-high medieval keep offers breathtaking views of the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy massif, and the Cantal mountains. Don't miss the 14th-century fortified gate, topped with its clock, which marks the entrance to this bygone setting.

After the trials of phylloxera and wars, Montpeyroux has regained its vitality. The vines have been replanted, and the Les Chemins de l'Arkose estate now offers AOP Côtes d'Auvergne wines, cultivated biodynamically.
