Historic capital of the Auvergne


Perched on its hillock and protected by ancient ramparts, Clermont-Ferrand is a city combining modernity with a captivating old town.

Clermont-Ferrand is best known for its volcanoes and enchanting landscapes but the historical capital of the Auvergne and capital of the Puy de Dôme department was actually born in 1630, from the union of two rival cities, Clermont and Montferrand.

The highest lava stone cathedral in France is located in Clermont-Ferrand.

The 100 m high Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral was built from the 13th century onwards with black stone from Volvic. This gothic cathedral was built at the top of the historic center of Clermont-Ferrand is a good starting point to visit the city. 
 

Notre-Dame du Port Basilica


A few steps away, the Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica is a collegiate church in the Romanesque style.
Located in the Port district, the basilica is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port was built in the first third of the 12th century in stone called blond arkose. On the outside, the semicircular arches and the delicacy of the mastery of the builders of the time.

The blond arkose is enhanced by the lava stone mosaics that crown the apse. The crypt of the basilica contains a copy of the statue of the Black Madonna that was venerated by pilgrims in the XIIIth century.

 

The Place de Jaude


Go to the Place de Jaude, the most popular and largest square in Clermont-Ferrand for shopping and light shows. This square is bordered by the Saint-Pierre-des-Minimes church, built in the 17th century, the 19th century theatre and the department stores' "les galeries de Jaude". Two bronze statues, that of General Desaix de Nanteuil to the south and Vercingetorix to the north, stand in the square.
